3 Simple Rules of the Healthy Indian Diet

Many people have asked at a few social occasions this past year to give them just a few good rules to follow to eat more healthy. One uncle asked me to.distill The Healthy Indian Diet into just 3 things to do. Well, there are 7 principles behind the diet (find them on page 75 of the book), but if I had to say the best 3 rules to follow, they are:

1. Eat good carbs. Not all carbs are bad. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes are full of nutrients and fibers. Your body needs energy for daily functions, so why not get your carbs from natural food full of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and other molecules that do a body good.

2. Eat good fats. Some fats are good. The best source of good fats are nuts such as walnuts and pistachios. Fish are a good source, too. And some oils like olive oil contain many good fats that should be eaten, while coconut oil and ghee are good for cooking. Good fats keep our cells healthy.

3. Eat good sources of protein. Eggs, dairy (especially dahi or yogurt), fish, and dals (lentils) will make you feel full and give your body the building blocks it needs to stay in shape.

Thanks to "The South Beach Heart Health Revolution" by Dr. Arthur Agaston for helping me distill the Healthy Indian Dse thoughts.

Wow! You are so right. As an Indian, I have begun to appreciate how balanced our diets actually were when we were growing up - vegetables, rice/ rotis, dal and yogurt - all the food groups. Of course may be we ate too much white rice! LOVE your site.

Check out http://leanstreak.com/ and let me know what you think of my blog. I admit I need to get more Indian food on there :) Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated!
