Not just secrets to a long life, but to a good quality of life well into your 90s and 100s. That is what writer Dan Buettner says he can tell you by explaining why people on the Greek island of Ikaria routinely live that long while living with their families (not nursing homes) and gardening, climbing hills (see picture to right), playing poker even.

Diet is one part. (Lots of greens, things we may consider weeds here like dandelion leaves.) Exercise is another part. (Not the kind we do in the gym, but the kind to get us from point A to point B and back everyday.) But the biggest part? Society, according to Mr. Buettner. (Your society, how closely connected and how much you care for it and vice versa.)

A recent story in the NY Times on an epidemiological study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology ("Aspirin Use and the Risk of Prostate Cancer Mortality in Men Treated With Prostatectomy or Radiotherapy") concludes that men with prostate cancer were less likely to die of the cancer if they were taking aspirin regularly, implying that aspirin -- an anti-inflammatory medicine -- slows the growth of the cancer.

This is not the first study to demonstrate that aspirin may slow cancer growth. Most of the other older studies on aspirin, such as the ones cited in the Lancet Oncology review from 2009 have been done on aspirin (and other similar medicine called NSAIDs), have been done on patients with colon cancer and reach a similar conclusion.
