Dr. Aggarwal's beginningsBharat Aggarwal, who grew up in India, found his way to the Bay Area where he conducted biochemistry research and earned his Ph.D. at Berkeley.
He then worked at Genentech in the 1980s, where he discovered Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a molecule that induces inflammation (which helps cancer cells grow) and induces cells to die (which helps the body attack cancer cells). Dr. Aggarwal's team also helped elucidate the role of Nuclear Factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B), which regulates inflammation. When NF-kappa B is poorly regulated, it is believed to help cancers grow.
